More info follows in my latest mailout about the show - contact me via my presenter's page if you would like to receive future mailouts:

Dear friends

The new edition of my Kosher Jam show for UK Jazz Radio/Europe Jazz Radio focuses on Jewish connections in Latin music.

From the 1950s on, American Jews in one way or another became major participants in Latin music. Latino musicians have attested to this. Some of the key names include Larry Harlow, Mark Weinstein, Mark Levine, Bobby Matos, Richie Zellon, Andrea Brachfeld, and there’s tracks by all of these. The show highlights the contribution trombonist and arranger Barry Rogers made to Eddie Palmieri’s 1970’s experimental band with a track from the first Latin album to win a Grammy. Also featured: Herbie Mann with Machito.

Hour 2 of the show highlights fusions of Latin music with Jewish music, featuring tracks by Benjamin Lapidus, Steven Bernstein, Roberto Rodriguez, Eugene Marlow, Irving Fields, and the madcap Yinglish humour of Mickey Katz. Also Juan Calle & his Latin Lantzmen, a band that came together to make one record in 1961 that included African-American jazz greats Clark Terry and Doc Cheatham, and Latino legends Charlie Palmieri and Ray Barretto.

And more besides, including George Gershwin’s Cuban Concerto.

First transmitted on Tuesday, March 13th, the show can now be accessed via the listen again service at: http://www.ukjazzradio.com/listenagain.htm

Hope you can join me

Mike Gerber
Writer, Journalist, Broadcaster

Book website: http://www.jazzjews.com

Member of the National Union of JournalistsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
